Macgregor New Home Build
New Home Build
MacGregor House is a refined knock-down rebuild that demonstrates how modest residential architecture can achieve outstanding environmental performance through intelligent design, careful siting, and precise construction.
The design embraces this topography by positioning the single-storey dwelling at the upper portion of the site to maximise solar access, privacy, and views across the Belconnen region toward the Lower MoMolongloature Reserve. A detached garage at street level resolves access efficiently while separating utilitarian functions from the domestic environment.
The compact home has been tailored to the occupants’ needs, incorporating a bedroom, study, open-plan kitchen, meals and living area, bathroom, and European laundry. Raked ceilings and a sunken lounge create spatial richness within a modest footprint, enhancing light, volume, and connection to the landscape.
The home achieves an 8.3 Star Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) in Canberra’s Climate Zone 7, driven primarily by passive solar design. Northern orientation, controlled glazing, deep eaves, and high levels of insulation create a stable and comfortable internal environment with minimal reliance on mechanical systems.
Externally, Weathertex Weathergroove cladding provides a carbon-neutral finish that unifies the dwelling and garage, while tiered sandstone landscaping and native planting anchor the home within its environment.
MacGregor House demonstrates that high-performance, sustainable housing can be achieved through clarity of design, material restraint, and strong collaboration between builder and architect.
